INCORE

Initiative on Conflict Resolution and Ethnicity

INCORE, the Initiative on Conflict Resolution and Ethnicity, is a joint initiative of the University of Ulster and the United Nations University. The INCORE Internet Service is intended to act as a central resource on the internet for those in the area of conflict resolution and ethnic conflict. It is intended to serve not only academic researchers but also policy makers and practitioners in mediation. The INCORE Internet Service has strong links with CAIN (Conflict Archive on the Internet), which provides information about conflict in Northern Ireland.

INCORE aims to integrate research, training, practice, policy and theory, and to provide an international focus on ethnic violence. In cooperation with international organizations, especially the UN and regional bodies, it is developing a systematic approach to understanding and resolving the problems of ethnic conflict. It complements existing expertise in training by encouraging new approaches. In particular, its programs have a strong emphasis on comparative analysis and reflect the policy concerns of the UN.

INCORE’s approach in both research and training includes a particular concern with two neglected phases in the cycle of ethnic conflict: the successful management of pluralism; and the transition from the ending of violence towards a fair and stable settlement. This latter concern includes an increasing interest in the preparation and training of peacekeepers.
