March 1997

The Carter Center

Abstract

The Palestinian elections of January 20, 1996, marked an historic step in the Middle East peace process that built upon the 1979 Camp David Accords and the 1993 Oslo Accords. The elections provided Plaestinians living in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem an opportunity to participate in building their own democratic self-governing polity for the first time.
