This meeting note is from the third International Expert Forum (IEF) held at IPI on December 10, 2012, in a joint collaboration with the Folke Bernadotte Academy, IPI, and the Social Science Research Council. The forum brought together top-level researchers, policymakers and practitioners to consider whether, to what extent, and under what conditions peacekeeping operations (PKOs) contribute to the durability of negative and positive peace and how it shapes organized violence. An important goal of the forum was to highlight challenges confronting peacekeeping and ways in which peacekeeping has adapted to achieve short- and long-term dividends. Another objective was to synthesize lessons learned and policy implications for enhancing peacekeeping efficacy. It featured sessions on the past effectiveness of peacekeeping, the conditions for successful PKOs, and on the importance of partnerships and exit strategies. The meeting note concludes with a series of reflections directed at those conducting research on peacekeeping. The fourth and final meeting of the IEF will be held Thursday, May 23, 2013.
