International Relations after 2003 from the Editors' Perspective (PDF, 2 pages, 69.6 KB)
Virtually unknown five years ago, the JIRD has now firmly established itself in the academic community, in Europe and beyond. It has become the official journal of the Central and East European International Studies Association (CEEISA). The progress of JIRD has been noted amongst the leading publishers. It recently entered a partnership with Palgrave Macmillan, which will be publishing the journal as of 2004. Last but not least, Stefano Guzzini (University of Uppsala and Danish Institute for International Studies) and Milan Brglez (University of Ljubljana) have been entrusted to serve as JIRD editors for the next five years. Petr Drulák from the Institute of International Relations in Prague will continue to be the Book Reviews Editor. In short, the journal has become a truly international enterprise and will continue to do so.
Towards A Six-Continents Social Science: International Relations
(PDF, 14 pages, 154.5 KB)
by Knud Erik Jørgensen
Whereas previous meetings had dealt with substantive issues like international political economy, security, sanctions and neutrality, the agenda for the Prague meeting was different, 'the very problem of a definition of the discipline was, it seems, taken up for the first time' (Amstrup 1989:35). However, the World War II and subsequent divisions of the world into "the East" and "the West" and "North" and "South" turned the League of Nations project into a non-starter. Nonetheless, for our understanding of the genesis of the discipline the League committee seems to play an important role.
International Relations: A Perspective Based on Politics, Economics and Systems
(PDF, 14 pages, 158.9 KB)
by Patrick James and Murray Wolfson
A recent and prominent exposition offers a succinct and decisive answer - Steve Smith (2004), in a presidential address to the International Studies Association, says 'no'. Smith points to several problems with academe which, in his view, contribute more to reinforcing the world order led by the United States (US) than truly explaining and evaluating it. In particular, according to Smith (2004) International Relations needs to become more inclusive in its frame of reference, with rational choice being viewed as one of several models of individual action as opposed to the "true way".
