The penitentiary world during Franco

Ricard Vinyes

Culture and Conflict: Volume 55 (Fall 2004)

Abstract

This contribution seeks to explain the penitentiary world during franquism, and describes the life of the political prisoners in post-war Spain. It tries to understand the meanings of such "concentracionary universes" comparing with other penitentiary systems. The author analyzes the political basis of poverty, and ousting that these men and women had to endure, and the way they fought to survive this situation. Ricard Vinyes also gives details of how their sons were taken away from them for political rehabilitation reasons. The sources used for this study have been documents provided by the Prison and the Spanish State.
