The Council on Foreign Relations was founded in 1921 by businessmen, bankers, and lawyers determined to keep the United States engaged in the world. Today, the Council is composed of men and women from all walks of international life and from all parts of America dedicated to the belief that the nations peace and prosperity are firmly linked to that of the rest of the world.
The Council is dedicated to increasing America's understanding of the world and contributing ideas to U.S. foreign policy and accomplishes this mainly by promoting constructive debates and discussions, clarifying world issues, and publishing Foreign Affairs, the leading journal on global issues. The Council's goals are to add value to the public debate on international affairs; energize foreign policy discussions nationwide by making the Council a truly national organization with membership across the country; identify and nurture the next generation of foreign policy leaders; and make the Council the source for ideas and clear and accurate information on key international issues for the interested public.
