Abstract

The Danish Foreign Policy Yearbook focuses on Danish foreign policy and Denmark's position internationally and transnationally, both at the regional and global levels. This year's articles are:

The International Situation and Denmark's Foreign Policy 2011
Claus Grube, Permanent Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, provides an official outline of Denmark's foreign policy in the past year.

Denmark and France between Independence and Allegiance:
The Peregrinations of the Enfants Terribles in Euro-Atlantic Defence

Matthieu Chillaud: France and Denmark is an odd couple. We have been allied for decades, but have very little in common when it comes to ambitions and policy. But the two countries do share an ambiguous posture towards Euro-Atlantic defence, and at the same time both now seem willing to toe the line.

The Arab Spring and Danish Democracy Promotion in the Arab world
Rasmus Alenius Boserup analyses how the Arab Spring influenced Danish foreign policy and especially the Danish effort to promote democracy in the Arab region - and how this effort can be sustained in the future.

Good News: Libya and the Danish Way of War
Peter Viggo Jakobsen and Karsten Jakob Møller: The Libya war was ‘a perfect war' in the sense that it enabled Denmark to fight for its principles in a high-profiled, clean and comprehensive way, together with NATO-allies and with UN support.

The Blind, the Deaf and the Dumb! How Domestic Politics turned the Danish Schengen Controversy into a Foreign Policy Crisis
Marlene Wind: What did actually happen in Danish politics when the border control agreement was negotiated in the spring of 2011? Why were the reactions from Germany and the EU so strong? It was a mistake to think that such a debate would not attract attention from abroad, and the Danish government only realized that much too late.

What did Denmark Gain? Iraq, Afghanistan and the Relationship with Washington
Anders Henriksen and Jens Ringsmose: Denmark's military contributions to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars made it easier for Danish politicians, diplomats and officials to enter into dialogue with their American counterparts. But the Danish approach could have been more strategic.
