Abstract

This report examines the data behind the Bush claim that he has made America safer and concludes that “the numbers don’t lie – the Bush strategy is not working.” The most fundamental role of the President is to keep America safe, and five and half years into the Bush administration, Third Way examines the numbers behind Bush’s national security strategy. The report measures seven key national security indicators: Iraq, terrorism (broadly defined), Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, the condition of the American military, and China. The study finds that across the board, the numbers show that the Bush approach is failing.
