Global Commons and Domain Interrelationships: Time for a New Conceptual Framework?

Abstract

The latest Strategic Forum focuses on an often overlooked area of military strategy and strategic thought. Redden and Hughes have written a compelling proposal for a new conceptual framework as it relates to the Global Commons. Defined as the "space, international waters and airspace, and cyberspace" the Global Commons now encompasses more than traditional geography, and according to Redden and Hughes, requires a holistic approach "to break down domain stovepipes and treat the global commons not as a set of distinct geographies, but rather as a complex interactive system."
