Abstract

The International Conference on Asian Food Security (ICAFS) took place on 10–12 August 2011 at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore. ICAFS 2011, themed ‘Feeding Asia in the 21st Century: Building Urban- Rural Alliances’, was convened in the context of complex and multifaceted challenges throughout food systems in Asia. The conference sought to address timely questions relating to these challenges, and foster discussions among a range of stakeholders from Asia’s food sectors. Many food security questions centre upon the need to sustainably and equitably feed and nourish a larger, more urban and increasingly affluent Asian population in the face of spiralling food prices, changing agricultural practices, natural resource and environmental concerns (such as water and arable land) and the growing number of undernourished in the region. In order to formulate a multifaceted and integrated global strategy to tackle this unique set of circumstances, ICAFS 2011 brought together an array of experts from across public, private, civil society and academic spheres.
