Abstract

Effective peacekeeping must incorporate expectations management, mission and mandate clarity, enhanced bilateral and coalition-based partnerships, and the use of innovative technologies and strategies. The United States and Europe should reinvigorate their current engagement in U.N. and regional peacekeeping, while opening avenues to new types of engagement through troop contribution and mission entrepreneurship in the U.N. Security Council (UNSC). Thematic discussions on the mission-specific aspects of peacekeeping like the role of regional bodies, protection of civilians, and rule of law will guide endeavors to craft more successful and efficient peacekeeping efforts.
