Abstract

Economic and financial crises always impact on migration patterns, processes, and policies, as witnessed by the experiences of the Great Depression, the Oil Crisis, and the Asian, Latin American, and Russian financial crises in the 20th Century. Even though it has been the most severe global recession since the Great Depression, the recent global economic and financial crisis has not had as severe an impact on international migration as earlier crises did, contrary to predictions at the start of the crisis.
