Somalia after the Ethiopian occupation

Abstract

Two important events at the turn of the year 2008-09 are the background for this DIIS Brief by Senior Researcher Bjørn Møller: the withdrawal from Somalia of the Ethiopian troops, which have in actual fact occupied the country for the last two years, and the resignation of "President" Abdullahi Yusuf.

Everything seems to show that Somalia will soon be controlled by Islamist militias, which have been strengthened, especially by combining their religious struggle with the national fight against the occupation. The background for this development - with the US "War Against Terror" as one point of departure - will be examined in more detail in a forthcoming DIIS Report.
