Yong Deng examines Chinese perceptions of and reactions to the U.S. global power status and grand security strategy after the cold war. He shows that conflict between the United States and China is structural and has been on the rise. Family Homelessness in New York City: A Case Study
Rarlph Nunez examines the recent rise in family homelessness in New York City and details the underlying causes and characteristics of family homelessness and its effect on children. He discusses political trends affecting affordable housing and new strategies for transitional housing.
Dissonant Politics in Iran and Indonesia
Daniel Brumberg offers alternative concepts of state building, ideological change, and transitions in Islamic polities. Dissonant states, he argues, institutionalize competing visions of political community in ways that promote interelite competition, bargaining, and ideological innovation. He illustrates his argument by exploring the evolution of dissonant politics in Iran and Indonesia.
The Earned Income Tax Credit: Knowledge Is Money
Katherine Ross Phillips examines demographic differences in knowledge about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) among parents. Using data from the National Survey of America's Families, she finds that almost two-thirds of low-income parents have heard about the EITC, but low-income Hispanic parents are less than half as likely as low-income non-Hispanic parents to know about the tax credit.
Rethinking Media Politics and Public Opinion: Reactions to the Clinton-Lewinsky Scandal
Regina G. Lawrence and W. Lance Bennett offer an alternative interpretation of public opinion during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Rejecting the "prosperity" explanation, they explore four dimensions of public reactions to the Clinton impeachment that are not well explained by simpler models.
Radical Change in Israel: A Review Essay
Myron J. Aronoff discusses social, economic, cultural, and political changes that have dramatically transformed Israel. He critically evaluates recent publications on the relationship between the liberalization of the economy and the peace process, public policy and electoral reform, and consensus and dissent on central issues relating to democracy and peace.
