Roll Back Malaria

Founding Date: 1998
Objective: To reduce malaria-related mortality rates, particularly in Africa, and to help improve affected countries' health systems.
Membership: The World Health Organization, World Bank, UNICEF, UNDP, government agencies, development banks, bilateral agencies, private sector bodies, and NGOs.
Budget and Funding: $20.1 million in 1999.

 

The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research

Founding Date: 1971
Objective: To promote food security through innovative and sustainable agricultural practices.
Membership: 58 members, including 21 developed and 20 developing nations, foundations, and international or regional organizations. Partner organizations include NGOs and private corporations.
Budget and Funding: $345 million in 1998. Industrial countries, specifically the members of the OECD's Development Assistance Committee, account for more than two thirds of CGIAR financing.

 

The Global Environment Facility

Founding Date: 1991
Objective: To finance environmental projects for recipient governments and NGOs seeking to promote biodiversity, improve energy efficiency, reverse the degradation of international waters, and phase out the use of ozone-damaging substances.
Membership: 165 governments. The governing council is composed of 16 representatives from developing countries, 14 from developed nations, and 2 from transition economies.
Budget and Funding: $2 billion pledged toward its trust fund in 1994. An additional $2.75 billion was added in 1998 by 36 developed, transition, and developing countries. gef collaborates with the private sector to mobilize project cofinancing.

 

The World Commission on Dams

Founding Date: 1998
Objective: To undertake a global review of the development effectiveness of large dams and establish internationally accepted criteria for dam construction.
Membership: Government agencies, multilateral development banks, bilateral agencies, domestic river basin authorities, research institutes, hydropower companies, and NGOs representing persons affected by dam construction.
Budget and Funding: $9.8 million. Donations have come from member governments, the World Bank, World Conservation Union, NGOs such as the Worldwide Fund for Nature, foundations such as the U.N. Foundation, and private firms such as the ABB Group.

 

The Global Water Partnership

Founding Date: 1996
Objective: To improve management of the world's water resources.
Membership: Governments of developing and developed countries, U.N. agencies, development banks, professional associations, research organizations, private corporations, and NGOs.
Budget and Funding: $6 million. Sponsors include the World Bank, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, and UNDP. The Ford Foundation and several Western European governments provide additional support.
