No. 53 - Spring 2004 - Cross Perspectives On Political Surveillance

Abstract

The publication of the files of the East-German political police STASI has been of crucial importance for modern-day thinking on political surveillance and policing. In this article, Sonia Combe analyses the practices through which the East-German political police managed to organise a system in which the individuals where not only controlled by the government but also by their fellow citizens. Both loyal to the regime and to their hierarchy, the informers working for the STASI illustrate how East-German society participated to its own repression. The author here tries to map the mental world of these informers and to show its diversity.
