Assuring the Environment

No policy topic is more current, and often controversial, than the state of the environment. Amidst the turbulent public and political waters that often accompany environmental debates, the deeper, quieter, stream of scientific understanding is often lost. Equally, debate seldom considers the future in terms of the implications of knowledge and innovation for the ability to manage current environmental problems. In part, this is because careful deliberation and long-term thinking are always lost in the hurly-burly of public debate. However, it may also be because the scientific community itself is not organized to inject knowledge and innovation more forcefully into matters of public policy. The commentaries that follow both address the need for a stronger scientific voice, and provide illustrations of the importance of careful analysis and innovation as an underpinning for environmental policy.
