Acknowledgements

I wish to thank the authors of the articles in this collection for having them published in the Political Science Quarterly and for now granting permission to reprint them in this volume. I am especially grateful to Robert Jervis for providing a special introduction and concluding essay for the book. Bob Jervis has been on PSQ’s editorial advisory board ever since I became its editor and has given me thousands of hours of wise counsel affecting every aspect of the journal’s operation. I thank Bonnie Hartman for assuming most of the burden of transforming the articles into a published book and in general for doing an excellent job as PSQ’s managing editor. I thank Vilma Caraley, Jean Highland, Richard Pious, and Robert Shapiro for editorial advice, and I also thank the small staff at the Academy of Political Science—Philip Biondo, Loren Morales, Allison Pretto, and Grace Wainer—for keeping the Academy running smoothly and efficiently. Finally, I am grateful to John Michel and Alex Thorp for facilitating the publication at Columbia University Press.
